WINDHOEK: The leadership of the Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL) has resolved to rename its education fund after the late Education Minister, Dr Abraham Iyambo.
The SPYL Education Fund will now be called the Dr Iyambo Scholarship Fund.
In addition, the leadership has also resolved to establish the Dr Abraham Iyambo Memorial Lecture to be held each February in order to celebrate Iyambo’s life from childhood until the time of his death.
Iyambo passed away on Saturday in London, United Kingdom.
This was made public by the SPYL Secretary Elijah Ngurare in a media statement availed to Nampa here on Wednesday morning.
He said the decision to rename the SPYL Education Fund after Iyambo was taken by the youth leadership at its just-ended national executive committee (NEC) meeting that was held at the Efinde village in the Okongo Constituency in Ohangewna Region on Saturday.
According to Ngurare, the late Iyambo, at 52, has shown many Namibians the right path to a successful life through his spirit of hard work and patriotism.
“We shall remember the late Dr Abraham Iyambo as a humble human being, as a great leader distinguished by exceptional courage, simplicity, hard work and patriotism.
We do highly resolve that his personal sacrifices to a free and independent Namibia were not in vain. We shall remember Iyambo as a nationalist. As such, it is no surprise that tears being shed for him are from all the country’s 13 regions and 107 constituencies,” noted Ngurare.
The late Iyambo will be accorded a State funeral at the Pionierspark Cemetery on Saturday.
His remains will arrive at the Hosea Kutako International Airport from the United Kingdom on Thursday.
