WINDHOEK: The Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL) has strongly condemned the affiliation of organisations based on tribes with the National Youth Council (NYC).
SPYL Secretary of Information, Mobilisation and Publicity, Job Amupanda told Nampa on Tuesday that the SPYL Central Committee (CC) meeting held over the past weekend directed that NYC affiliation based on tribal formations should be ceased immediately.
He said the SPYL CC decided to establish a technical committee to conduct an overall re-look into the objectives of the NYC, and how it deals with the issue of membership.
Amupanda questioned what kind of development is tribally oriented, and what will happen if young people start managing resources on the basis of tribes.
He noted that such an action could destroy the future of the country.
“It sets a very bad precedent. It is not fair and it is very dangerous. At the end of the day, it means that every institution out there can have these types of categories, and that is why we (SPYL) generally oppose that notion,” Amupanda said.
Approached for comment, Julius Namoloh, who is acting on behalf of Executive Chairperson of the NYC Mandela Kapere, said the SPYL has still not laid an official complaint on the matter.
He confirmed that the Ovambanderu Youth League is affiliated to the NYC, but explained that the group has been affiliated to the council since its inception.
Namoloh also noted that the SPYL has the mandate to raise concerns it observes within the institution, as it was founded by the youth wing.
“I do not want to comment further on the issue, and it is better that we rather wait for the leadership of the NYC to make an official statement,” Namoloh said.
