The President of South Sudan has accused his political adversary of stoking up tribal conflict following what he described as a “failed coup” in December last year.
President Salva Kiir said that his former Vice-President Riek Machar characterized their political struggle as an ethnic issue after he failed to oust the president from power.
Joseph Msami spoke to President Kiir following his address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday.
He began by asking the South Sudan leader why he thought the coup was politically rather than ethnically motivated.
