DURBAN, Feb 5 –The New York Times has listed Durban amongst the most popular tourist destinations and the top ten cities to visit around the world in 2015.
The announcement was made by the eThekwini Municipality’s Head of Tourism Philip Sithole during the release of the city’s 2013/2014 Tourism statistics in Durban Wednesday.
The city recorded an increase of more than 12 per cent in the number of visitors from 2013, with 7.4 million visitors in 2014.
Sithole said the city also generated more than 19 billion Rand (about 1.63 billion US dollars) in tourism revenue and created more than 95,000 jobs in 2014.
However, Sithole said the biggest challenge now would be to maintain the momentum and attract more visitors.
“They [statistics] indicate an increase in terms of visitors who came to the city of Durban in the last 12 months. The increase was more than 12.5 per cent which was very great for us, and we are very excited that the spend for the whole year was more than 7.3 billion USD,” he added.
“We are seeing an increase in terms of numbers because we have moved from less than a million visitors in in 2013 to more than 1.4 million visitors.”
