SOUTH AFRICAN OLYMPICS TEAM WARNED TO TAKE PREVAUTIONS FOR ZIKA VIRUS OM RIO

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has stressed that the South African team for the Olympics in Brazil later this year should take precautions against the Zika virus which is widespread in South America.

Motsoaledi re-assured the country over the weekend that a visiting Colombian businessman diagnosed with the Zika virus, contracted the virus in his home country.

The minister has announced precautions to ensure the aedes mosquito which carries Zika virus does not reach South Africa.

As Zika causes babies to be born with abnormalities, he has urged pregnant women not to travel to countries where the virus is widespread.

“It will be much safer for pregnant women to stay home , but for any other groups of people like people going there for the Olympics, I’m already writing to the Minister of Sports to advise of precautions they need to take like mosquito repellents. However, for pregnant women, the safer thing to do is to not travel to such countries.
