SOUTH AFRICA SEEING RISING NUMBER OF BOGUS DOCTORS

JOHANNESBURG, The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) has warned that there is an increasing number of individuals who are illegally practising as doctors in the country.

More than 400 cases of suspicious doctors were reported to the HPCSA in the past financial year, the HPCSA says.

Last week, James Mogaswa Mathopa was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court in Rustenburg in North West Province for posing as a doctor for six years.

The head of the inspectorate division at the HPCSA, Eric Mphaphudi, said Tuesday: “In 2016 and 2017 we investigated 468 complaints of illegal practice and out of those we reported 108 of those matters to the police where the total of 38 people were arrested.”
