Yesterday a number of replies to written questions Members of Parliament (MPs) had asked members of the Executive were released which Parliament did not process and distribute.
An investigation by the DA this morning revealed that Parliament’s Questions Office is completely incapacitated at the moment and has no one processing replies for the foreseeable future.
This is simply unacceptable, and I will write to the Secretary of Parliament, Gengezi Mgidlana, and request that he rectify this as a matter of urgency.
Written questions and replies are one of Parliament’s most important oversight mechanisms and MPs rely on them to obtain information on critical issues facing the country and to scrutinise Executive action.
With just weeks left before this year’s local government election, Parliament cannot allow – even if just through incapacitation – parties and the public to be deprived of critical information that could help them make informed decisions at the polls.
