PRETORIA, A White Paper on South Africa’s National Health Insurance (NHI), a financing system which will ensure all South Africans are provided with essential healthcare regardless of their employment status, will be gazetted Friday, says Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi.
He told a media briefing here Thursday that the NHI policy document was ready for submission to Parliament for a law to be passed on it. The NHI white paper will be gazetted so that it can be accessed by the public, he added.
The NHI scheme will allow all South Africans to access healthcare services irrespective of their financial status and will help to reshape the country’s healthcare services.
Stakeholders in the health sector will have discussions soon to provide inputs on the new insurance scheme to help all parties involved to understand what impact it will have on the current Health Act.
Elaborating on the progress made with regard to the NHI scheme, Matsoaledi said: “That policy document called NHI has been approved by Parliament and is now ready to go to Parliament for a law to be made.
“So it will be printed in the government gazette tomorrow (Friday) to be made available to the public. Then the process of making an Act will start following which a number of Acts will have to be amended in one way or the other.”
