DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA, Feb 2 — Six people have been killed after they were struck by lightning in separate incidents in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province, paramedics say.
In one incident, three family members died near Colenso, about 190 kilometres northwest of here. A 46-year-old mother, her nine-year-old daughter and her 10-year-old niece died when lightning struck the house they were in.
Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said Sunday that the woman’s husband survived the incident.
In a separate incident, three people were also struck by lightning near Vryheid. Two women, aged between 70 and 80, and a man, believed to be in his sixties, were confirmed dead at the scene.
Three other women sustained serious injuries. They have been admitted in hospital.
