JOHANNESBURG, Nov 5– Six news faces have been named to the squad announced by South African football coach Shakes Mashaba to play Sudan in an African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifier next week.
The three goalkeepers in the squad are Darren Keet, who plays for Kortrijk in Belgium, Siyabonga Mpontshane of Platinum Stars and Brilliant Khuzwayo of Kaizer Chiefs. Keet is likely to start in goal in place of the late Senzo Meyiwa, the Bafana Bafana captain shot by gunmen last Sunday.
Mashaba hasn’t named the captain for the game yet. South Africa take on against Sudan in Durban on Nov 15 before travelling to Nigeria for their last group match on Nov 19.
Originally scheduled to take place in Nelspruit, the fixture against Sudan was moved to Moses Mabhida Stadium in honour of Meyiwa, who was born in Umlazi, south of Durban.
Meyiwa was shot dead last Sunday in Vosloorus, Johannesburg, while visiting his singer-actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo. Two people allegedly entered the house and demanded cellphones before fleeing.
The new additions also included May Mahlangu, Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Luvolwethu Mpeta and Lehlohonolo Majoro.
Bafana currently top the group A standings and remain in pole position to qualify for next year’s continental showpiece. A win against Sudan would guarantee Bafana’s place at the Cup of Nations.
