Schools infrastructure development on track

The Eastern Cape MEC of Provincial Planning and Treasury, Phumulo Masualle, will tomorrow (15 August 2013) be opening, yet another school, the Kwezilethu Senior Primary in Mthatha as part of the Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Development Initiative (ASIDI) programme.

ASIDI is a national programme that aims to eradicate inappropriate structures as well as mud and dilapidated schools across the country. The ‘one school per week campaign’ was launched by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, in July 2013, with the official handing over of Mandela Park Primary in Mthatha. The handover marked former President Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday and his contribution towards education.

Acting GCIS CEO, Phumla Williams said, “In upholding her commitment, Minister Motshekga ensured that ‘one school per week campaign’ is being implemented and is on track. Thus far, 5 schools have been handed over to the communities since July this year. The new and revamped schools have the provision of water and sanitation and are well-equipped.”

The programme is a clear commitment to government’s initiative to improve the quality of education. This will enable government to shape the future leaders and create a skilled workforce that would contribute to South Africa’s economic growth path.
