Pretoria: Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is set to hold a meeting with Zimbabwean Finance Minister Tendai Biti this month, said National Treasury.
The meeting between the two leaders will discuss Zimbabwe’s request for further financial assistance, after which the request will be discussed by the South African Cabinet.
“We are not disclosing the date of the meeting,” spokesperson at National Treasury said on Tuesday.
South Africa has previously assisted Zimbabwe, contributing R300 million to the SADC Agriculture Support Programme – a portion of which was used for the purchase of seeds, fertiliser and fuel for agricultural production in Zimbabwe.
The support was provided through the African Renaissance Fund (which is managed by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation) in terms of an agreement reached in 2008.
South Africa also extended R300 million as a Budget Support Grant to Zimbabwe for the rehabilitation of municipal infrastructure, including water reticulation, health services and education. The funding was approved by Parliament.
