Pretoria: President Jacob Zuma has sent his condolences to Zambia following a public bus accident, which killed over 50 people in central Zambia’s Chibombo district in the early hours of Thursday.
The accident occurred when the bus, belonging to state firm, Postal Bus Services, was travelling from Ndola city in the Copperbelt Province to the Zambian capital Lusaka. According Zambian police, 51 people died on the spot and 10 sustained injuries. The bus is believed to have been carrying about 70 passengers.
Police say the accident occurred when the truck lost control after crashing into another vehicle before colliding with the bus, which subsequently overturned. “South Africa joins the people of Zambia in mourning the loss of lives of more than 50 people during this unfortunate accident. Our hearts go out to the families, relatives and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts are with the injured as we wish them a speedy recovery,” said President Zuma.
