NAIROBI– Visitors Rwanda scored a crucial away goal in the dying minutes to force a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the 2019 Under -20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against hosts Kenya at the Machakos Stadium, about 60 kilometres east of here Sunday.
The junior Harambee Stars under coach Stanley Okumbi had opened the scoring in the 7th minute through Richard Odada but despite numerous attacks Rwanda held on to prevent a second goal.
The visitors scored the equalizer in the 89th minute through Byiringiro Lague.
The return leg will be played in Rwanda on April 21 and the winner of the two legged encounter will face Zambia in the second round.
The top African teams, including Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria and Senegal, have been exempted from the first round.
Kenya was disqualified from the 2017 edition for fielding ineligible players in the first round match against Sudan.
The 2019 Under-20 African finals will involve eight nations and will be hosted by Niger.
