Exeter is a Labour city but ahead of the leadership debate, it is one divided as supporters make their choice between Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith.
But this evening, members of the party and the wider public will have the opportunity to hear from the left of the party as Corbyn’s second in command gives a speech in Exeter.
Exeter Trades Council (ETCU) is hosting a public meeting at 7pm at the Barnfield Theatre, with the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer as key note speaker.
ETUC, supporting Corbyn in the ongoing leadership race have agreed to double tonight’s discussion evening on the future of the labour and trade union movement as a rally in support of Corbyn’s re-election as leader of the Labour Party.
ETUC Press Officer Chris Musgrave said:
“This is a unique opportunity to hear from, and ask questions of a key member of the shadow cabinet and Corbyn’s team.”
“The event is a sell-out, the Barnfield have been running a waiting list for people hoping for last minute no-shows all week.”
“Corbyn and McDonnell are lifelong friends of the union movement. We are delighted to welcome John and double up our event in support of Corbyn’s leadership campaign.”
John McDonnell’s visit is part of a wider South West tour, demonstrating the current leadership’s genuine attempt to regain Labour losses under previous Labour leaders in the South West.
