WINDHOEK: President Hifikepunye Pohamba has congratulated Nigeria on winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations’ (AFCON) football tournament, which ended in South Africa last Sunday.
The Head of State made these remarks at his annual meeting with members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Namibia at State House yesterday.
Pohamba said the tournament demonstrated the power of sports in unifying people, and giving them an opportunity to celebrate together in a spirit of healthy competition, adding that the Africa Cup of Nations was a true embodiment of Pan-African solidarity.
Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Charge d’Affaires and heads of international organisations accredited to Namibia, including consuls from different countries, attended the event.
In a joint statement read by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Namibia, Angolan Ambassador Alexandre Manuel Duarte Rodrigues, they all pledged their continuous support to the Namibian Government in its fight against poverty, inequality and unemployment.
