NNA – The General Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, General Luciano Portolano, on Friday visited House Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Tammam Salam, and Minister of Interior and Municipalities Nohad Mashnouq.

Talks touched on the situation in the UNIFIL’s operation area in south Lebanon, and the affairs related to the execution of its mission as per UN resolution 1701, a statement by the UNIFIL indicated.

It added that General Portolano expressed gratitude for meeting with Berri, Salam, and Mashnouq, noting that they have confirmed their “strong support” for the peacekeepers as well as Lebanon’s commitment for the implementation of the aforementioned resolution.

“We discussed the situation in the south and I informed them of the talks that took place during the last tripartite meeting (…) I voiced my appreciation for the support the UNIFIL and I personally are receiving from the government and the state institutions as well as from the local authorities and spiritual leaderships in the south,” Portolano said.

“The Lebanese officials, for their part, they expressed appreciation for the excellent relations between peacekeepers and the southerners, whereby I confirmed to them that these relations are among our priorities and that we shall seek to preserve them,” he concluded.
