OTJIWARONGO: The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region will continue to set up roadblocks on national roads in order to curb road accidents.
The police road blocks in Otjozondjupa were put up without prior notification to national road users on Thursday evening until Monday morning.
Otjozondjupa Police Regional Crime Investigations’ Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Khairabeb told Nampa on Monday that his Force did not record a single road fatality over this past weekend due to many roadblocks that were set up.
“It is very surprising that the more we deliberately put up the roadblocks on our national roads, the less we record accidents of a serious nature, or even nothing at all,” noted Khairabeb.
He said it shows that most of the road accidents that happen on national roads in the Otjozondjupa Region between Otavi and Otjiwarongo, as well as Otjiwarongo and Okahandja, can be linked to the ignorance of road rules.
The deputy commissioner said since the roadblocks have proven themselves to be effective measures that can curb road accidents here, the police in the region will continue to set them up unexpectedly.
This safety precaution will be supported by hand-held speed-detection cameras anywhere between the roadblocks.
Khairabeb said over the past weekend, a roadblock between Otavi and Otjiwarongo was set up, as well as a speed camera crew.
“We had another main roadblock at the T-junction of the Okakarara road, and another fixed one at about 12 kilometres towards Okahandja, including a speed camera crew in between,” he said.
The police officers on roadblocks over the weekend only issued nine tickets to drivers who towed unlicensed trailers.
The top cop then thanked those law-abiding motor-vehicle drivers who maintained the 120 kilometre per hour (km/h) speed limit on national roads.
“It is the right thing to do. We don’t want any loss of life on our national roads due to speed-related accidents.
Therefore, I am happy that our operation was successful, and in return we did not record any fatal road accident over this past weekend,” he beamed.
