PRETORIA– South African police have confirmed that the leader of opposition party the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has met Police Minister Bheki Cele to discuss alleged death threats against him.
The Minister’s office said here Wednesday that the matter was now in the hands of the National Police Commissioner for investigations.
The EFF claims that a group of people from North West Province have approached hitmen from Eastern Cape Province to assassinate Malema.
This is not the first time that Malema’s life is reported to be under threat. In 2010, while he was still the president of the youth wing of the ruling African National Congress, the ANC Youth League, there were allegations of threats that a farmer deom Delmas in Mpumalanga Province was prepared to pay 2.0 million Rand (about 168,000 US dollars) for his assassination.
EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu says the party is not taking these threats lightly.
