Windhoek: President Hifikepunye Pohamba left for Accra, Ghana on Thursday afternoon to attend the funeral of that country’s late president, John Atta Mills.
Mills, 68, died after a short illness in a military hospital there on 24 July, and his burial is scheduled for Friday this week.
Pohamba is accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Peya Mushelenga and Tuliameni Kalomoh, the special advisor to Foreign Affairs’ Minister Utoni Nujoma.
He was seen off at the Eros Airport by Nujoma, Prime Minister Nahas Angula, Trade and Industry Minister Hage Geingob, Safety and Security Minister Nangolo Mbumba and other senior Government officials.
The late Mills took over as Ghana’s president from John Kufuor in January 2009 after winning the most votes in the 2008 presidential election.
Ghana’s Vice-President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as the new president, hours after Mills’s sudden death.
Pohamba and his delegation are expected home on Saturday.
