Pedestrian and cyclist die in accidents at Rundu

SIVARA: A cyclist and a pedestrian died on the spot when they were run over by vehicles in separate incidents on the outskirts of Rundu on Wednesday.

The first incident occurred at Sivara village some 50 kilometres (km) west of Rundu on Wednesday morning, when a cyclist who was riding in an easterly direction was run over by a Government vehicle.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Kavango Regional Crime Investigations Co-ordinator, Deputy Commissioner Willie Bampton told Nampa on Thursday that the incident happened while the cyclist was moving onto the right side of the road. He subsequently collided with the Government vehicle and died on the spot.

The deceased has been identified as the 15-year-old Sackaria Sarara, a resident of Sivara village.

His next of kin have been informed of his death and the police have opened a case of culpable homicide.

In the other accident, Matamu Hamutenya, age unknown, died on the spot after he was hit by a bakkie at Mile 20 village on the Rundu-Mururani road on Wednesday evening at around 18h45.

Deputy Commissioner Bampton said he had been trying to cross the road when he was run over.

Hamutenya was a resident of Mile 20 village.

His next of kin have been informed of his death and a case of culpable homicide has been opened by the police.
