OTJIWARONGO: The Otjozondjupa Regional Road Safety Forum aimed at mitigating road accidents on the national and local roads here was launched in Otjiwarongo town on Thursday.

Rosalia Sibiya-Muashekele , special advisor to Otjozondjupa Regional Governor Rapama Kamehozu launched it on behalf of the governor at the Out of Africa Town Lodge.

Kamehozu in his speech said the creation of a regional road safety forum needs maximum community participation as major role players. He noted that community members must play a leading role in the forum as it is a collective responsibility together with the law enforcement agents to ensure that the country’s roads are safer for all those traveling on it.

He reminded the forum to see to it that its campaigns on road safety focus on educating vehicle drivers to reduce speed and also avoid dangerous overtaking. “I believe that reducing the speed at which vehicles travel on, will have a direct bearing on the nature of crashes in the first place and the associated number of fatalities,” he said.

Kamehozu urged the National Road Safety Council (NRSFC) to avail itself for the purpose of guiding the Otjozondjupa regional road safety forum. Otjozondjupa Chief Regional Officer, Jeaneth Kuhanga was nominated chairperson of the regional road safety forum here on Thursday.

Other members like deputy chairperson, secretary, treasurer and vice treasurer will be elected later in August this year. The regional road safety forum of the Otjozondjupa Region will ensure that campaigns on road safety are conducted, so that road fatalities in the region are drastically reduced, said executive secretary of the NRSC, Eugene Tendekule.

Tendekule said the forum will also see to it that the real causes of road accidents on national roads passing in the region are identified with possible solutions to them. NRSC conducted a four-day training workshop which led to the formation of the Otjozondjupa regional road safety forum. The training started on Monday and ended on Thursday.
