OSHAKATI: Old Mutual’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Operations, Sakaria Nghikembua, said the Old Mutual/Nedbank Education Trust targets to provide at least 100 bursaries Namibians over a period of 10 years.
Nghikembua said this during the Old Mutual Namibia Media Engagement Dinner held at one of the popular hotels in Oshakati on Thursday night.
The bursaries of the trust, Nghikembua said, are intended to assist the beneficiaries to further their studies at institutions of higher learning within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Region.
According to Nghikembua, the trust has thus far awarded a total of 40 bursaries since it commenced its operations in 2009.
He stated further that medicine, accounting, engineering, computer science, business science, law, actuarial science, aquatic science and geology are the fields of studies covered by the trust.
“We are quite big in education,” Nghikembua stressed, adding that his company has also embarked on the Old Mutual Foundation which serve as the company’s vehicle to deliver on its economic and social transformation vision for Namibia.
He pointed out that the current focus areas of the foundation are education, community development and skills and capacity building. Old Mutual, according to Nghikembua, has also joined hands with the Ministry of Education in 2011 in order to promote excellence in education within Namibia by pioneering the Old Mutual National Education Excellence Awards.
This programme recognize and awards the best education region in the country, best overall government school in each education region and the overall best higher level and ordinary level grade 12 students.
Mweshipandeka High School (Oshana Region), Ohangwena Region-based Haimbili Haufiku Senior Secondary School (SSS) and Negumbo SSS (Omusati Region) were some of the schools received education excellence awards this year.
We also contribute to sports development by sponsoring the Old Mutual Far North Championships each year since 2004, as well as the Victory Races,” the Old Mutual’s CEO for operations stated.
He, however, told the journalists that the media engagement function was not organized to lobby them to report only positively about Old Mutual.
The function/dinner, according to Nghikembua, was about networking between Old Mutual and members of the media based in northern Namibia. The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), The Namibian newspaper, New Era and Namibian Sun were represented at the engagement.
