RUNDU: National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) Secretary-General Evilastus Kaaronda was today refused entry into the 9th Congress of the Namibia Public Workers’ Union (Napwu) currently underway here. Kaaronda was stopped from entering the congress venue – the University of Namibia (Unam) campus at Rundu – by Namibian Police Force (NamPol) officers who were stationed at the main gate.
Approached for comment, Kaaronda confirmed the incident to Nampa today. He said that although there was no reason advanced to him, he suspects that it has to do with the fact that he has been critical, and on numerous occasions challenged the Napwu leadership on how they handled the vexing matter of the Government Institutions’ Pension Fund (GIPF) Development Capital Portfolio (DCP) defaulted millions.
He said the Napwu leadership was probably worried that if he attends the congress their election might not be in their favour. NAPWU General Secretary Petrus Nevonga could neither confirm nor deny having instructed police officers to deny Kaaronda entry into the congress.
A man allegedly died while he was travelling in a motor-vehicle on the Western Bypass section of the B1 road in the capital this morning. Senior Superintendent of the Windhoek City Police and Emergency Management Unit Gerry Shikesho confirmed the incident upon enquiry by Nampa this afternoon.
Shikesho said the deceased person, together with some members of his family, was travelling on the Western Bypass section of the B1 road this morning when he started complaining of chest pain as the group was approaching the Von Eck Power Station. A few minutes, thereafter, the deceased person allegedly collapsed and died. When the City Police and paramedics arrived at the scene, the deceased person was already dead.
