WINDHOEK: A case of negligence and reckless driving was opened against the driver of the Nissan Naval pick-up that belongs to Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development, Jerry Ekandjo, that burnt beyond recognition late last week.
The incident took place 46 kilometres before Windhoek.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Crime Investigations’ Coordinator for the Khomas Region, Deputy Commissioner Sylvanus Nghishidimbwa told the media on Sunday that the tyres of the wheels came off, resulting in the car running on its rims.
“This is a preliminary report, but it (tyres coming off) is suspected to be the cause of the vehicle catching fire,” Nghishindimbwa said.
He said no one was killed, but the three occupants, who are police officers, sustained minor injuries.
Nghishidimbwa said Ekandjo was not in the car, as he traveled to Windhoek from the North by airplane on the same day. The Police do not suspect any assassination attempt, but investigations continue.
