OTJIWARONGO: Nine people died on the spot after a 65-seater bus and a truck collided head-on between Tsumeb and Oshivelo on Saturday morning.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Oshikoto Regional Commander, Commissioner Anne-Marie Nainda told Nampa in a telephonic interview on Saturday that the road accident happened about 85 kilometres from Tsumeb to the Oshivelo Gate between 24h00 and 01h00 on Saturday.
“There were 65 passengers plus the driver in the orange public transporter bus at the time. Eight people from the bus died, as well as the truck driver,” she said.
Nainda said 35 people were admitted to the Tsumeb State Hospital in critical condition, while two more passengers were flown to Windhoek, also in critical condition.
She suspects that the truck, which was driving from Oshivelo, veered into the right lane in which the bus was driving from Tsumeb, resulting in the collision. The victims and the deceased’s next of kin have not yet been informed.
Police investigation officers from the Tsumeb Police Station were still busy on the scene on Saturday morning to determine the exact cause of the accident, noted Nainda.
