WINDHOEK: Elijah Ngurare was re-elected as the Secretary of the Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL) for the next five years.

Ngurare was re-elected unopposed during the Fifth SPYL Congress which ended on Sunday afternoon in the capital.

SPYL National Executive Committee member Julius Namoloh withdrew from the race earlier. Ngurare will be deputised by Veikko Nekundi, who replaces Jutta Shikomba.

Nekundi was the SPYL’s Secretary for Economic Affairs before being elected into his new position. The six-day congress also elected 30 members of its Central Committee (CC) as delegates to the congress of the mother body slated for November this year.

The top 10 members of the CC are: Job Amupanda, Karas Regional Governor Bernadus Swartbooi, National Youth Council (NYC) Executive Chairperson Mandela Kapere, Mbangu Paulus, Felix Haingura, Immanuel Nashinge, Josephat Hiwana, Soini Ikela, Ephraim Nekongo and Paula Kooper.

SPYL members from the Omaheke, Karas and Hardap regions are not represented in the CC, while the Oshana region has the most members in the CC, followed by the Khomas Region.

The congress took place from 28 August to 02 September 2012 at the Windhoek Technical School.

It was held under the theme “SPYL in Pursuit of Namibia’s Technological and Economic Revolution”.
