Plans to evacuate sick and injured in eastern Aleppo delayed
Plans to evacuate the sick and injured in eastern Aleppo did not begin on Friday morning as planned, the UN Spokesperson has confirmed.
The conditions were not in place to ensure a safe, secure and voluntary evacuation of these people and their families, humanitarians present on the ground said.
Here’s Stéphane Dujarric.
The UN humanitarian partners are present in Aleppo and ready to carry out medical evacuations as soon as conditions allow. We reiterate that the UN is not involved in any way in any of the proposed evacuation of other civilians from eastern Aleppo.
Meanwhile, an internal and independent UN Headquarters board of inquiry in charge of investigating September’s deadly aid convoy attack in Urum al-Kubra, north-west of Aleppo city, will start work on Monday.
Many people were killed and seriously injured when the joint UN/ Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) convoy, carrying trucks loaded with food, blankets and medical supplies, was hit.
Killing of Palestinian refugees in Syria refugee camp condemned
The killing of Palestinian refugees in a camp in Syria has been condemned by the UN agency that supports them (UNRWA).
A mother, her daughter, their driver and a one-year-old baby were killed on the night of 18 October when their vehicle was shelled at around ten in the evening.
They were trying to leave the Khan Eshieh Palestine refugee camp, south of the Syrian capital, Damascus, to which access has been highly restricted.
UNRWA is urging that civilians who wish to leave the area, are allowed to do so in safety.
It’s also calling for the full humanitarian access to Khan Eshieh to deliver emergency food, cash assistance and medicines.
Concern over illegal return of Syrians from Greece to Turkey
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has expressed “serious concern” over the illegal return of ten Syrian nationals from Greece.
The Syrians were among a group of 91 people who had formally expressed their will to seek asylum in Greece shortly after their arrival on 14 October.
According to UNHCR, the number of refugees and migrants arriving in the European nation has dropped in 2016.
