Windhoek — The 20th edition of the Nedbank Desert Dash, renowned as the world’s longest single-staged mountain bike race, was launched on Tuesday, featuring an extended course from 397 kilometers to 401 kilometers through the Namib Desert.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the race, which challenges cyclists to traverse the route from Windhoek to Swakopmund within 24 hours, will commence at Grove Mall in Windhoek on December 6 and conclude at Platz am Meer Mall in Swakopmund on December 7, 2024. The adjustments to the route are part of the celebrations marking the race’s 20th anniversary. Over 900 cyclists have registered for this year’s race, including 160 in the two-person team category, 624 in the four-person teams, and 190 riding solo. Additionally, the e-bike category will see 15 cyclists in four-person teams competing for the second consecutive year.

Nedbank Namibia Managing Director Martha Murorua expressed pride in the event’s growth and significance. “The Nedbank Desert Dash has become one of the most sought-after cycling events on the continent. For the past decade, Nedbank has proudly supported Namibian cycling, significantly elevating the profile of cycling in Namibia and attracting international participants,” she stated.

Murorua also highlighted the deeper implications of the event’s sponsorship, describing it as a partnership that aims to drive positive change, uplift communities, and promote a healthier society. Deputy Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service Emma Kantema-Gaomas echoed this sentiment, noting the race’s evolution into a symbol of Namibia’s potential. “The Nedbank Desert Dash is a beacon of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors collaborate towards a shared vision. The race has significantly contributed to Namibia’s sports tourism industry, attracting hundreds of visitors each year who come not only to compete but also to explore the beauty of our country,” Kantema-Gaomas elaborated.
