WINDHOEK: The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) on Tuesday launched the Namibia Sports Awards in the capital on Tuesday.
The Namibian Sports Awards are presented annually to deserving sportspersons who have attained outstanding achievements and contributed significantly towards Namibia’s strive for sports excellence.
During the launch, the Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) handed over a cheque of N. dollars 350 000 to the NSC towards the hosting of the event, slated for 26 October 2012 in the capital.
Making the announcement on the Sports Awards, the Chairperson of the Namibia Sports Awards Committee, Piet du Plooy said entries will commence today until 30 September 2012.
He said the guest speaker at the awards this year, will be a world famous basketball player from the United States of America (USA), but could not reveal his name, saying his name will be announced at a later stage including the availability of tickets.
He therefore called on the different sports organizations and associations to nominate the right candidates for the awards.
According to information from the NSC, the sports associations that are eligible to enter nominees under their different sports codes include the Namibia Women in Sport Association (NAWISA), the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) and the Tertiary Institutes Sports Association of Namibia (TISAN).
For NAWISA nominees may be entered for basketball, bowling, cricket, gymnastics, shooting, soccer, swimming, equestrian, fistball, motor sports, seawater angling, soaring society and volleyball.
For NNOC, the nominees may be entered for volleyball, tennis, table tennis, athletics, netball, boxing, badminton, hockey, football, jukskei, rugby, shooting, softball and waterski.
For TISAN is wrestling, endurance riding, cycling, darts, golf, rugby, archery, chess, freshwater angling, karate, sailing, saddle horse, squash and DSN.
