Motion for a resolution on Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus – B8-2017-0094

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Article 168 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas the coronavirus responsible for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) has been detected in Saudi Arabia and is also present today in South Korea, where the outbreak resulted in 186 infections and 36 deaths in 2015;

B.  whereas the virus was also identified in Germany in 2015, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control issued an expert opinion on this disease on 21 October 2015;

C.  whereas the risk assessment is nonetheless not entirely satisfactory, and the migration crisis in particular poses an increased risk of infections occurring in Europe;

1.  Urges the Commission, through the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, to revise its recommendations on the coronavirus in light, inter alia, of the new risk created by the migration crisis;

2.  Urges the Member States to screen migrants on the basis of Directive 2013/33/EU.
