MARIENTAL: More firefighting teams are being deployed to battle a veld fire at the /Huibes Conservancy in the Hardap Region’s Gibeon Constituency since Sunday. By this morning, the fire was estimated to have destroyed an area of about 120 kilometres of vegetation as it heads in the direction of Docheib South near Maltahöhe.
Detective Inspector Samuel Gariseb of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Mariental told Nampa upon enquiry today that a team from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry would be deployed today.He said more police officers from Mariental will also join their colleagues who have been attempting to contain the fire since yesterday.
Yesterday, Gariseb said the fire started at around 19h00 on Sunday, and was extinguished by the Gibeon fire brigade and Mariental police. The fire was put out Sunday night, but it started again immediately after the teams left.
Villagers at Omaihi and Ekuenje in the Okakarara Constituency whose houses were damaged by heavy rainfall in February this year, yesterday received building materials from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM). The villages are situated about 70 kilometres east of Okakarara in the Otjozondjupa Region.
The Chief Control Officer in the OPM, Gerson Tsamaseb handed-over the donation to the beneficiaries at Okakarara, telling those present that his office was in February 2012 informed that houses at Omaihi and Ekuenje were damaged after strong winds and heavy rainfall were experienced in the area.
He explained that they then conducted their assessment on the losses, and one of the recommendations were that the villagers should reconstruct their houses on a 50/50 basis, where Government would assist them with building materials and they would do the rebuilding.Tsamaseb then urged residents to ensure that the new structures are built in such a way that it is solid, and can withstand heavy storms.
