The Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Dr Siyabonga Cwele and the Head of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Africa Ms Elsie Kanza will interact with the youth in Soweto as part of the Internet for All Initiative on 20 June 2017. This is part of the Department’s Youth Month commemoration programme.
These interactions follow South Africa’s decision to partner with the WEF, the private sector and civil society to connect 22 million South Africans to the internet by 2020 through an the Internet For All initiative.
The Internet for All initiative seeks to address the following four barriers to internet inclusion;
1. Infrastructure gaps.
2. Limited affordability of data and gadgets.
3. Poor digital skills and low confidence in the use of the internet.
4. Lack of relevant digital content.
Minister Cwele and Ms Kanza will participate in the establishment of the South African Internet for All Working Groups. The working groups are coordinated by the Government and include the WEF, large and medium size global and local ICT companies and civil society. They are a collaborative platform that will set targets, monitor progress and revised these targets as we urge closer to the year 2020.
The key outcomes of this interaction will be a roadmap with clear targets and deadlines towards improving the inclusion and meaningful participation of South Africans in the digital economy.
