Minister Mosebenzi Zwane engages North West traditional leaders on review of Mining Charter

Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane (MP) will tomorrow, 3 November 2016, engage the North West Province’s House of Traditional Leaders on proposed changes to the Mining Charter.

The Minister will be joined by the Premier of the North West Province, Mr Supra Mahumapelo (ML).

The draft reviewed Mining Charter was gazette in April this year, and seeks to – inter alia – strengthen the efficacy of the Mining Charter developed in terms of section 100 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (Act No 28 of 2002) (MPRDA) as one of the tools for effecting meaningful transformation of the South African mining and minerals industry.

The draft reviewed Mining Charter further seeks to integrate Government’s transformation policies and legislation in order to enhance the ease of doing business, create regulatory clarity, predictability and certainty.

The Minister and department have been engaging various stakeholders from the sector on the Charter and is encouraged by the parties’ openness and willingness for frank and robust discussions.
