Ouagadougou: Minister Emmanuel Ouédraogo has called on the public to purchase artworks to enable artists to live with dignity from their craft. Speaking at Bangrwéogo Park in Ouagadougou during the opening of the 5th edition of the Ouagadougou Wékré international contemporary arts market, the Minister of State in charge of Culture emphasized the importance of acquiring art to encourage artists and support their livelihoods.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the minister highlighted that merely admiring the artworks is not enough; purchasing them is crucial for the artists’ sustenance. The event, taking place from November 18 to 24, 2024, showcases remarkable craftsmanship and aims to improve the living and working conditions of artists. Minister Ouédraogo pointed out that many artworks often gain value in European art markets, unfortunately sidelining local artisans.

Vincent Koala, the general commissioner of the event, noted that this 5th edition features 56 artists and 93 works centered on the them
e of young people’s dreams. He explained that the exhibition allows for an exchange of ideas and offers a platform for artists to express their resilience amidst challenges, emphasizing the enduring spirit of Burkina Faso.

One of the highlights of the event is the seniors’ exhibition at the Ricardo Hotel, showcasing 16 prominent visual artists from Burkina, as announced by Koala. Additionally, the event will include master classes for 15 young artists, guided by experienced artists to enhance their creative skills and aesthetic abilities.

This edition of the Ouagadougou Wékré international contemporary arts market includes participation from artists from Niger, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, and Ivory Coast, reflecting a diverse representation of regional talent and creativity.
