ONGWEDIVA: The Annual Metropolitan Summer Cup, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious sport event in northern Namibia, was officially launched at Ongwediva Town in the Oshana region on Monday night.

Deputy Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Pohamba Shifeta, and Metropolitan Namibia’s Managing Director (MD), Jason Nandago, were at Ongwediva to jointly launch the competition.

“We have hosted the metropolitan Summer Cup for the past six years, and the event’s growing in leaps and bounds has become a household name in the regions,” Nandago said this whilst speaking at the launching function at Bennies Entertainment Park.

He explained that the tournament has not only brought enjoyment to the athletes, but it has also augmented the impact of the legacy of the embodiment of leadership, discipline, respect and friendship among the youngsters.

Football and netball are the two sport codes featuring in the tournament. “Making the choice to sponsor a sporting event was, for Metropolitan, the easy part. It was easy because play comes naturally to children particularly with regard to soccer and netball,” Nandago told those present.

The Metropolitan Namibia’s MD pointed out that his life insurance company sponsored the tournament for the first time with some N.dollars 50 000, which increased gradually to the investment of N.dollars 130 000 this year.

According to Nandago, Metropolitan has invested in the tournament in the hope that with the cooperation of the local school leaders, regional sport officers, parents and other well-wishers, the company creates leaders who will become regional and national leaders. He added that through the tournament, Metropolitan also hopes to create the captains of industry, economic giants and, above all, good citizens.

“While in business we always try to be the lone leader of the pack, it is our desire to see other corporations copy what we are doing here and sponsor similar sporting events across the country so that every young man and woman in Namibia can share the experience,” Nandago told his audience.
In turn, Shifeta commended Metropolitan Namibia for sponsoring the tournament, which he described a clear sign of commitment towards the development of sport at the grassroots level.

The Metropolitan Summer Cup, Shifeta said, has always surpassed many expectations by showcasing athletics performance of the highest caliber and preparing young athletes to enter club champions and quality for platforms in the junior and senior national teams.

The Deputy Minister described football and netball as the games that had played a pivotal role in the Namibian communities and has birthed many talented athletes such as Colin Benjamin, Ricardo Manetti and many more.

The Metropolitan Summer Cup attracts a number of younger footballers and netballers from the northern regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto. Its kick-off day for this year is yet to be decided, while its finals matches are expected to take place on 22 September at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
