Mbanza Kongo: At least 659 children aged nine months to 14 years have been vaccinated against measles in the village of Mbanza Mazina, located in the Mbanza Kongo commune of northern Zaire province. The vaccination campaign was initiated in response to 17 reported cases of measles, including three fatalities, which occurred between December 20 and 24.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the commune’s health director, Manuel Nkanz, stated that the campaign, which took place from January 17 to 19, also extended to 10 other villages along the access road to Madimba commune. Nkanz confirmed that the measles situation is now under control, and both health and traditional authorities are actively working to educate the population on preventive measures against the disease.

The health director attributed the deaths of the three children to parental negligence, as some parents chose traditional healers over medical centers for treatment. He emphasized that the families only resorted to hospital care when the children’s conditions deteriorated significantly.

The village of Mbanza Mazina is situated five kilometers from the town of Mbanza Kongo and has a population exceeding 2,000 residents.
