SWAKOPMUND: A married couple who were arrested here over the weekend in connection with the assault of a traffic officer, made their first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Elana van Staden, 43, and Gerhard van Staden, 40, appeared before Magistrate Erich Kesslau.
The couple face charges of obstructing the course of justice, common assault and contravening the Road Traffic Act through inconsiderate driving.
They were granted bail of N.dollars 500 each, whereafter their case was postponed to 19 November 2012.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Crime Investigations’ Coordinator for the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa told Nampa on Monday that the two suspects allegedly assaulted a municipal traffic officer on Friday.
She said the couple obstructed a municipal traffic officer by forcing the officer into his official vehicle, and grabbing his key from him.
Kashuupulwa thus called on members of the public to respect law-enforcement agents, and to refrain from preventing them from executing their duties.
