More than 100 firefighters have been tackling a major fire near Exeter Cathedral which started in an art gallery and spread to the Royal Clarence Hotel.

Police said there have no reports of injures and all hotel staff and guests were safely evacuated after the fire was reported at 5.20am on Friday.

Most of High Street and South Street are closed, and there is no access to or through Cathedral Green.

The fire is reported to have started at Castle Fine Art where the upper floors are being converted into apartments.

Flames were then seen coming through the roof of the hotel. Hundreds of shoppers gathered at cordons to watch firefighters tackle the incident.
