LUDERITZ: A 44-year-old man suspected of killing another man by hitting him on the head with rocks at LUderitz on Saturday, has been remanded in custody until November to allow for police investigations.
Due to the seriousness of the case, the LUderitz District Court on Tuesday remanded Erastus Nangolo Jason in custody until 27 November this year to allow for police investigations in the case, in which he stands accused of murdering the 38-year-old Leonard Talakonima Shikongo.
It also allows for the suspect to apply for legal representation.
It is suspected that Jason murdered Shikongo by hitting him on the head with rocks on Saturday night.
The deceased’s body was discovered in the Amilema informal settlement, and two big bloodstained rocks were found at the scene of the crime.
Upon discovery of the body, Amilema residents immediately notified the police, which led to Jason’s arrest on Sunday morning.
The Commander of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Karas Region, Commissioner Armas Kasita Shivute confirmed on Wednesday that Jason appeared in court and has been remanded in custody.
Speaking about other crime-related matters, Shivute said reports are doing the rounds that an increasing number of people are being sodomised at the harbour town.
The commissioner however said despite reports that sodomy has been on the increase over the past two months, no complaints have so far been laid in this regard.
He appealed to residents to report such cases to the police.
“I heard rumours that sodomy is rife in LUderitz, but so far nobody has reported to the police that they were victims of such practices,” he said.
A resident of LUderitz which Nampa spoke to on Sunday said “a few people” have complained that they were sodomised in the informal settlements of Amilema and Area 7 in the past month.
