KEETMANSHOOP: The Martin family in Luderitz harbor town Friday paid the outstanding fees of 25 destitute learners from four schools in their town. Melvin Martin and wife Rina Martin has forked out an amount of N.dollars 16 550 .55 from the family trust fund (Martin Family Trust Fund) towards the disadvantaged learners school contributions.

Beneficiary learners can from Luderitz Secondary School, Nautilus, Diaz and Helen Van Rhijn Primary Schools. The move follows the request by Luderitz Constituency Councillor Jan Scholtz to Melvin to assist to bail out the children after their parents approached the constituency office for help.

Again the Martin family donated a total of 30 rugby, soccer and netball balls to the same schools.
Money for the balls is included in the N.dollars 16 550.55. At the official handover held at Luderitz Constituency Office, principals of the beneficiary schools were presented with cheques each to pay for the outstanding learners amounts.

At the same event, Samaritans also distributed food packages to 25 disadvantaged elderly people at an amount of N.dollars 5 500. Speaking to Nampa in an interview Saturday Melvin said the donation is to support children education and make their dreams come true. He continued that it is also a motivation for other members of society who have a little fortune on their side to give to the needy.

“Let’s plough back into the community, if you have a little success then look where you come from and support the needy,” he encouraged. In his speech received here Friday, Scholtz thanked the Samaritans for their effort to bail out the learners and said society should emulate their good example.
The politician said children education requires partnership of government, teachers, parents and business community to succeed.

“It is worth mentioning that school development funds should not be used as yardstick to discriminate, humiliate or mistreat children whose parents fail to contribute to the fund. Children should also not be sent home nor have their reports withheld due to nonpayment as many schools are doing in this country,” he charged.

He continued that such practices are unacceptable and unethical, and also makes the government policy of free education questionable.

Melvin Martin and his wife Rina forked out N.dollars 16 550.55 from the Martin Family Trust Fund towards the disadvantaged learners’ school development fund contributions. The beneficiaries are from the Luderitz Secondary School, and the Nautilus, Diaz and Helen Van Rhijn primary schools.

The move follows a request by Luderitz Constituency Councillor, Jan Scholtz to Melvin to ‘bail out’ the children after their parents approached the constituency office for help. In addition, the Martin family donated 10 rugby balls, 10 footballs and 10 netballs to each of the four schools.

The money for the balls is included in the N.dollars 16 550.55. The principals of the beneficiary schools were presented with cheques to settle the learners’ outstanding payments towards the schools’ development funds during an official handover ceremony held at the Luderitz Constituency office.
At the same event, the Good Samaritans also distributed food packages to 25 disadvantaged elderly people, valued at N.dollars 5 500.

Speaking to Nampa in a telephonic interview on Saturday, Melvin said the donation is to support the children’s education and make their dreams come true. He said the donation should serve as motivation to other fortunate members of society to give to the needy.

Such practices are unacceptable and unethical, and also make the government policy of free education questionable, said Scholtz.
