LAWYERS SAY ZUMA HAS MET DEADLINE TO SUBMIT REPRESENTATIONS WHY HE SHOULD NOT BE PROSECUTED

JOHANNESBURG– Lawyers for South African President Jacob Zuma have confirmed that the president has met the National Prosecuting Authority’s deadline and submitted representations on why he should not be prosecuted for fraud and corruption.

They said here Thursday that representations were made late Wednesday night. The representations were initially supposed to be submitted in November 2017, but the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shaun Abrahams, extended the deadline to Jan 31, 2018.

A ruling of the Supreme Court of Appeal had dismissed the application by Zuma and the NPA to appeal a High Court ruling that the decision of the former head of the NPA, Mokotedi Mpshe, to drop the corruption charges against Zuma was irrational.

Abraham has given prosecutors two weeks in which to consider Zuma’s representations. Thereafter he will decide whether to proceed with charging Zuma or not.
