With political killings intensifying in KwaZulu-Natal, Premier Willies Mchunu is doubling efforts aimed at ensuring a climate of peace and stability prevails in the province.
We have implored law enforcement agencies to be firm and act decisively to root out rogue elements that are behind political related killings.
There is a team of experts attached to the Hawks that has been assembled to investigate all these cases. Resources have been allocated to ensure intelligence gathering. The team is utilizing Digital Forensic Laboratory to analyse cellphone records and CCTV footage, the Premier said on Sunday.
His statements comes just days after a shooting incident involving ward councillors in Umzimkhulu Municipality in southern KwaZulu-Natal. Three councillors were attacked and shot in Ibisi on Thursday evening. They were returning from a meeting when they were ambushed by unknown gunmen, who opened fire on them.
Premier Mchunu said the Moerane Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate all political related killings will resume its work this week starting from Monday until 21 July.
Possible visits and sittings of the commission in places that have recently experienced killings of councillors is being explored. These include UMzimkhulu and Richmond to name but two. We need to remind the people of this province that Madiba brought peace and stability to this province. He stood for justice, forgiveness and reconciliation.
The Premier was hopeful that peace will triumph over hatred in the province, saying they are inspired by the late former president Nelson Mandela.
We are also confident that the spirit of Madiba will inspire the people of this province to unite and rise up to defend the climate of peace that has been prevailing over the years.
