NAIROBI, Feb 16 — Kenyan police have detained a South African drug trafficker whom they arrested with drugs late on Friday.

Kenya Airports CID commander Joseph Ngisa said the woman who was arrested after arriving from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was still emitting some pellets believed to be cocaine.

“We arrested the South African woman with drugs late on Friday. We have put her under observation and so far she has emitted 76 pellets we believe to be cocaine. The woman was en route to Gaborone from Sao Paulo,” Ngisa said.

“We still expect that she will be emitting some more pellets and hope to arraign her in court early next week. This is the second case involving South Africans this week,” Ngisa added.

Ngisa was referring to another South African woman whom the anti-narcotics police arrested last week with drugs worth 58,000 U. S. dollars. The suspect was charged in court on Friday.

Several suspects, mostly from across the world, have been arrested before and arraigned in court charged with drug trafficking.

Kenya is identified as a drug transport hub for drugs going to Europe from Asia and the Middle East. Hardly a week passes without an arrest of drug traffickers at the main airport.

Traffickers have increasingly become smarter because of improved surveillance at the airports and have now resorted to using roads to reach their intended destinations. Some of the drugs have filtered into the country with cocaine and heroin being blamed for the drug use epidemic that is currently being contained in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa.
