NAIROBI, The Kenyan Parliament has approved a list of nine nominees to represent the country in the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) and they are expected to be sworn in on Monday.
The group includes five nominees from the ruling Jubilee Party and four from the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition. They were endorsed by Parliament on Thursday.
The two major political coalitions finally agreed on Kenya’s representation to the EALA on Thursday night, in an election which saw personalities in the 11th Parliament receiving a new lease of life in the regional legislative body.
Former legislators dominated the list on both sides, with Jubilee electing former Kamukunji MP Simon Mbugua, former Nyandarua Women representative Wanjiku Muhia, former Mandera North MP Aden Noor, former Tigania East legislator Mpuri Aburi and Florence Jematia.
NASA’s list included leader Raila Odinga’s elder brother and former Bondo MP Oburu Odinga, former Balambala MP Abdikadir Aden, former Wajir women representative Fatma Ali Ibrahim and the son of NASA co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka, Kennedy Musyoka, a 30-year-old lawyer who had not been on the political radar until now.
