KEETMANSHOOP: Karas Regional Governor Bernardus Swartbooi has proposed that teaching hours be extended in the region in efforts to improve Grade 10 and 12 results here.
Speaking at the annual meeting between the regional council and Government staff held here yesterday, the governor indicated that he wants to see the school day start at 07h00 and end at 17h00.
He said his office is currently negotiating with the regional Directorate of Education to see if the extended teaching hours can be implemented.
The governor was further of the opinion that there should also be classes on Saturdays, adding that the new teaching hours, if implemented, should apply to all schools in the region.
He stated that roughly 200 days per are currently wasted on public holidays and long weekends, hence the need for longer hours to help students in his region do better in school.
