JOHANNESBURB, The African National Congress (ANC) International Relations Committee Chairperson, Edna Molewa, says it will be unfortunate if the International Criminal Court (ICC) were to rule against the South African government in the case involving Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir.
Speaking here Wednesday on the sidelines of the ANC’s National Policy Conference at Nasrec, Johannesburg, she added that it the ICC, which is based at The Hague in the Netherlands, ruled against South Africa, the decision would propel the country to speed up the process of withdrawing from the ICC.
The ICC is expected to rule on the matter on Thursday. The case involves Pretoria’s failure to arrest the Sudanese president when he was in the country to attend an African Union (AU) summit held in Johannesburg in June last year despite the ICC having issued an international warrant for his arrest to face charges of crimes against humanity.
South Africa is a member of the ICC and a a party to the Rome Statute which formed the court.
