OTJIWARONGO: A 37-year-old Grootfontein man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly punching an on-duty Namibian Police Force (NamPol) traffic officer in the face.
Ray de Bruin was arrested near the Omulunga Clinic in Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region on Wednesday evening for repeatedly punching Constable Franciscus Dauseb.
NamPol Otjozondjupa Regional Crime Investigations’ Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Khairabeb told Nampa in an interview on Friday that De Bruin was caught by a speed camera driving 98 kilometres per hour (km/h) in a 60 km/h speed limit zone that evening.
“He was stopped and instructed to pull his vehicle off the road so that Constable Dauseb could issue him a ticket for speeding,” said Khairabeb.
While Dauseb was writing out the ticket, De Bruin started insulting him and later punched him in the face several times, to the extent that the police officer’s left eye swelled up on the spot, explained Khairabeb.
Obstructing a police officer on duty to execute his/her duties, is a serious offence in Namibian laws.
The police officer opened a case of assault against De Bruin, which is being investigated under CR. No 25/10/2012.
De Bruin was expected to appear in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on Friday afternoon.
The fine for driving a vehicle in excess of the speed limit is N.dollars 500.
