KEETMANSHOOP: Members of the Goliath clan in Snyfontein and Berseba will stage a peaceful demonstration on Monday to publicly air their frustrations on traditional and political matters.
A petition will be delivered to Karas Regional Council (KRC) Chairperson Jan Scholtz, who is expected to send it to President Hifikepunye Pohamba.
One of the clan members, Ivan Jossop, told Nampa in a telephonic interview on Saturday that the march will take place in Berseba, situated some 130 kilometres north-west of Keetmanshoop.
According to him, one of their concerns is that they are being sidelined by political leaders in the region as well as the recognised /Hai-/Khaua Traditional Authority in Berseba.
“We are treated as if we do not exist, and are left out of all Government development projects, thus we want something to be done about this,” he said.
Another burning issue is the failed coronation of their chief, Johannes Fleermuys, that was stopped in April this year because it was apparently illegal.
Recognised /Hai-/Khaua Traditional Authority Chief Johannes Isaak and his captain Stephanus Goliath applied for a court order in the High Court that halted Fleermuys from being inaugurated as Chief of the Goliath Traditional Authority.
“Our people are crying, so we want the high authority to look into these things seriously,” Jossop said.
Scholtz confirmed to Nampa on Saturday that he was aware of the planned demonstration.
“I will send someone to receive the petition on my behalf because I have other commitments,” Scholtz said.
