BERSEBA: Members of the Goliath clan of the Berseba and Snyfontein areas on Monday held a demonstration to publicly air their frustrations on traditional and political matters.
One of the group’s main grievances is the failed coronation of their chief, Johannes Fleermuys, which was halted in April this year because it was apparently illegal.
The group say they refuse to be led by /Hai-/Khaua Traditional Authority Chief Johannes Isaak.
The traditional authority, which is recognised by Government, was formed last year in order to bring to an end a bitter chieftainship dispute which had split the /Hai-/Khaua clan into two factions, one of which was the Goliath faction.
Government recognised Isaak as chief of the /Hai-/Khaua Traditional Authority in 2011.
Isaak and his captain Stephanus Goliath applied for a court order in the High Court that stopped Fleermuys from being inaugurated as chief of the Goliath Traditional Authority.
The disgruntled group on Monday handed over a petition to Keetmanshoop Rural Councillor Jims Christiaan at Berseba. He will deliver the petition to Karas Regional Council Chairperson Jan Scholtz to forward it to President Hifikepunye Pohamba.
“We will never, ever be led by Johannes Isaak. Someone who used teargas, rubber bullets and sjamboks on us during his reign as a colonial master is now being imposed on us as a leader,” the petition stated.
The Goliath clan is still insisting that they want Fleermuys as their chief.
“It is not a privilege to have a leader, it is our right and we want Chief Fleermuys as our leader. We do not want to follow the so-called traditional leader,” read a poster displayed by one of the demonstrators.
In the petition, which was read by group spokesperson Ivan Jossop, the demonstrators also noted that Isaak’s coronation was not fair as they were allegedly not given a chance to state why they did not want him as chief. They are now request that the matter be relooked.
“We want to be gazetted as the Goliath Traditional Authority since we have land available gazetted in our traditional authority’s name and coupled with the required population,” they stated.
The clan members also went on the attack against recently re-elected Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL) Secretary Elijah Ngurare, who spoke out in defence of Karas Regional Governor Bernardus Swartbooi after his leadership skills were questioned by Berseba Constituency Councillor and former Karas Governor Dawid Boois earlier this year.
